Coconut Grove, Ahangama

The appropriately named Coconut Grove is charming and unique.  Clay walls and polished floors create a coolness in this lovely house, whilst the refined furniture and antiques inspire a sense of grace and calm.  The four bedrooms, are laid out in a square arrangement, with equal access to the cosy centrally located sitting room that has sofas and a Sat TV.  All the rooms are traditional and spacious with air con and over-head fans and come with characterful indoor / outdoor en suite bathrooms.  A reassuring consistency of Mahogany four poster beds and high ceilings, give the bedrooms a sense of maturity and elegance. An internal courtyard, a traditional feature of Sri Lankan houses, leads to the kitchen, a small store room with keypad safe and the internal dining room. Double doors on either side of the property lead out to the gardens and pool. The generous pool will keep swimmers of all ages entertained and refreshed and is overlooked at one end by the elevated pavilion (known locally as an ‘ambalama’ that literally means ‘meeting place’) that can either be festooned with cushions for a siesta or a yoga mat or two, for your own practise. The outdoor dining pavilion and BBQ to the side of the house is an excellent addition, and adds another dimension to this multi-faceted garden that also boasts visits from wonderful tropical birds. If you want to step outside of this calm oasis, there are lovely beaches nearby where you can admire the enviable patience and agility of the local fisherman. The villa comes with a house keeper who has been with the family for years and who will prepare breakfast and assist with other meals. Her rice and curry is a treat and for western cuisine either the guests should lead the way or Eden Villas can arrange a chef at extra cost. The BBQ is a mix of gas and charcoal and is self-catering. The house keeper is assisted by a room lady and a gardener / night watcher. A great spot for surfers to reside away from the salty shores, or a fantastic base for a family getaway, Coconut Grove sits in a lovely neighbourhood with great surf breaks, beaches and shopping within easy reach.
