Fira Santorini
The capital of Santorini, laying in the middle of the island, is the center of social life for locals and visitors throughout the year. Fira is home to some of the island's most important museums, such as the Museum of Prehistoric Thira, Archaeological Museum and the Santozeum, hosting the exhibition with paintings found in the prehistoric settlement of Akrotiri. The nightlife is endless, as are the options in culinary delights and all kinds of shopping; Gold Street is lined with numerous jewelry shops, seducing the visitors. The view of the volcano is very impressive from Fira and enjoying a cocktail at one of the quaint Caldera bars at sunset, to the sounds of classic Arias, is a timeless ritual.

For those seeking a way out of the throng, Kato Fira is a quiet and beautiful area around the churches of St. John and St. Mina. The region of Fragomahalas, north of Fira, is also worth a visit, as you can admire the great houses of old Franc families of the 19th century. For early risers, the “Manaviki”, the outdoor vegetable and fish market at the entrance of Fira, is well worth a visit in the wee hours.
Lastly, the cable car of Fira operates since 1982, serving 1,200 passengers per hour and lifting them from the old port of Yalos to Fira, within three minutes, covering a distance of 220 meters. Until 1982, Yialos port was connected to Fira through a series of stairs, that one could climb either on foot or on a donkey! However, the ship-owner Ev. Peter Nomikos, originating from Santorini, funded the construction of the cable car, offering the island a valuable and much-needed piece of machinery.
